Director's Note

Happy Spring Everyone!

The season has gotten off to a great start with welcome signs of spring just waiting to be discovered. The intoxicating scent of wildflowers, flowering trees and shrubs fill the air, and if you listen closely, one can hear the trill of the American toads who've emerged from the mud after a long winter slumber. Outside the nature center, early spring migrants like tree swallows have returned and can be seen catching insects on the wing, while Eastern phoebes sit on branches, pumping their tails, before darting out to catch a bug and return to the same branch to eat. It won't be long before colorful warblers make a stop to rest and refuel before they continue their journey north.

Speaking of color, the Visitor Center remodel in in full swing! General Services began installing new windows and beautiful blue corrugated metal siding in late March. A concept plan for the new rain garden was presented by Indigenous Ingenuities. The plan includes a moving water feature and colorful pollinator-friendly plants. Work on the garden should begin later this year after the installation of a new roof. Be sure to stop by or follow us on social media to check out the progress.

2022 was a year filled with growth at PVNC. New programs, staff, and facility upgrades combined with an expanding network of support from volunteers, members, grants, and donors are all cause for celebration. You can learn more about our accomplishments on Thursday, April 27th at 5:00pm at our Annual Membership Meeting. The Friends of Peace Valley Nature Center Board of Directors will present their 2022 Annual Report and welcome new Board Members. We have so much to celebrate and we hope you'll join us.

See you on the trails,

Kelly Joslin
