Director's Note

A farewell to summer always feels a bit bittersweet. Summer is such an anticipated season in Southeast Pennsylvania and at the Nature Center. Each summer we see our beautiful flowers in bloom, including the gorgeous splendor of our signature rose mallow. We watched over 200 campers experience the outdoors full of smiles and giggles, we basked in the warm sunshine, and found cool shade under our canopy of trees, which provide beauty, habitat, and flood water management all year long.

As summer fades, these bright green leaves will turn to stunning shades of yellows, reds, and oranges. With the change in season, we now prepare to greet school groups, preschoolers, parent/child participants and those still young-at-heart for immersive experiences in nature. Fall migration is underway and birders flock to our end of the park to search for feathered friends who stop here to rest and refuel before continuing their journey south.

The arrival of fall also brings our biggest fundraising event – the 7th Annual Fall Harvest Sampler. The event takes place Friday, September 29th along the shores of beautiful Lake Galena. The celebration  includes live music, silent auction, door prizes, and an extraordinary selection of craft beers expertly paired with tasty harvest foods and desserts served by B&B Beverages and Penn Taproom. We look forward to seeing you there!

There's plenty to see and do this month. We invite you to register for a program or event, take a stroll on a wooded trail, or stop by and say hello.  There are more changes, updates, and announcements ahead in the coming weeks, so stay tuned and watch us grow!

See you on the trails,

A River of Raptors

by Allison Cameron, Summer Intern

Did you know that Pennsylvania is known for being a hotspot for migrating raptors? The Keystone state is a fantastic destination for birdwatchers, especially during the fall migration season (Aug-Nov) when thousands of hawks, eagles, and other raptors make their way south.

Peregrine Falcon, Photo by Kevin Fox

Peregrine falcon migration typically peaks in October.  The name "peregrine" means wanderer, and they have one of the longest migrations of any North American bird. Tundra-nesting falcons winter in South America, and may move 25,000 km (15,500 mi) in a year.
